A Health Crisis You Should Know About…

by Tonya on April 2, 2009

One in 110 children has this disorder. A new case is diagnosed every 20 minutes. Males are four times more likely to develop it than females. It is the fastest growing developmental disorder in the United States. What disorder am I referring to? Autism.

Today is World Autism Day. This event is observed every year on April 2nd to raise awareness about Autism as a global health crisis.

World Autism Awareness Day

Children with Autism often have social interaction issues and may exhibit repetitive behaviors. Early intervention is the best way to treat this disorder. There has been some talk about vaccines increasing a child’s risk of developing Autism. However, according to key health organizations, there has not been enough significant research to validate this point.

Scientists are not completely sure what causes Autism, but a child’s environment and genetics are listed as possible factors. There is no cure for Autism, but there are several ways it can be treated. One such way is through educational and behavioral therapy. Doctors can also prescribe medication to reduce some of the symptoms of Autism. Some treatments for Autism are controversial.

This disorder can be devastating for parents. Even though it is more common in males, I have a female cousin with Autism. I have seen first-hand how stressful it can be. Parents of autistic children really need our prayers. Divorce rates for couples with autistic children are extremely high. Some parents of autistic children blame themselves and others are completely overwhelmed with the stress of raising a child with this disorder. I recently went to see my autistic cousin and it was a very emotional visit. There were good moments and bad moments. She cried when I left.

One day, I had to go to Kinko’s to get something enlarged for my husband. My son was starving and I was oblivious to his hunger because I lost track of time. Though he was starting to get fussy, I figured I could just run in with him really quick, get the picture enlarged, and come right out. Well, I figured wrong.

My son was mad and he let everyone in the store know about it. A really nice couple started talking to us. They offered my son a lollipop. Normally, I would be extremely cautious about this, but I had a good vibe from them. My son happily accepted. After talking with them, I found out that they were a Christian couple with two autistic sons. The gentleman, Mr. S. Charles Decker, wrote a book about a prairie dog with Autism that makes friends with a dachshund. He was making bookmarks to promote his book. I encourage you to check out his website, which is named after his book: Zack the Prairie Dog.

Here are some other resources on Autism:
Autism Speaks
Autism Society of America

I encourage you to show compassion whenever you see a parent with an autistic child. Don’t stare. Don’t look down on them. Pray for them that God will strengthen them daily and give them hope and encouragement. Pray for a cure to be found. We surely need it.
