I was recently contacted about reviewing a new iPhone app called, “Good News Bible” and I was pleasantly surprised.
The Good News Bible app for iPhone is a very colorful and comprehensive app that uses the Good News Bible Translation. The app allows you to make notes for a specific scripture, change the background, and enlarge the font. Each biblical book has a summary and breakdown at the beginning.
The app also includes a timeline that includes links for further explanation. It starts with the creation and fall and ends with the journeys of Paul. Several maps are included of Israel and Paul’s Journeys.
There are many concordance features, such as a “Who’s Who?” of the Bible with background information on each person. A section called “Life Issues” is listed that discusses topics such as abortion and racism from a biblical point of view. A dictionary of biblical terms is included too. Passages for special occasions, prayers from the Bible, Parables of Jesus, and the Miracles of Jesus are all included. A three week reading plan is available that takes key points from the Old Testament, The Gospels, and the Early Church.
And as if all of that wasn’t enough, the developers added another feature which happens to be my favorite part of the app: The Quiz. You can choose a Character Quiz or a Biblical Theme quiz. Each quiz has 5-10 questions for you to answer and you are timed. The answers are given at the end if you missed one. I sat up one night and did several quizzes, testing my knowledge and learning at the same time.
Overall, I think this app is great! The developers put a lot of hard work and information into this app, which could have easily been divided into three different ones (a bible, concordance, and quiz).
I must say that I wish the app had a clearly defined section on it that talked about the way to salvation. Maybe that will be offered on an update.
The full version of this app is currently listed for $6.99, which is a little more pricey than what I like to spend on iPhone apps. However, there is a “lite” version that is $1.99. The difference between the “lite” and the “full” version is that there are more quiz options, character profiles, and special sections in the “full” version.

Fascinating! I have to say I love that you were looking for the place that gave the ‘way to salvation’. If the developers pick up on that, you should get a royalty!

The developers actually told me that they would look into doing that in future updates. The app is so comprehensive that I just couldn’t believe that part wasn’t included. Merry Christmas!

The way I see it, this must be the best Bible app there is. I like the time line feature (would be very helpful to Bible learners) as well as the Life Issues. And your idea about adding a ‘Way to Salvation’ feature is really great. What a good way to spread the good news.
