I was deeply saddened to hear about the deaths of 31 U.S. service members, which included 22 Navy Seals. They were in a helicopter crash this past weekend in Afghanistan while going to provide aid to an Army Ranger regiment. This event was America’s worst single day death toll in Afghanistan. Details on the tragedy are still being investigated, but the Taliban is claiming responsibility.
If you missed the news and want more details about it, you can catch up here: U.S. official: Killed forces were reinforcing troops in Afghanistan and here: Slain Navy SEALs had targeted known Taliban leader, officials say
News reporters on CNN interviewed the family of Aaron Carson Vaughn, a Navy Seal who died in the crash. Geneva Carson Vaughn, Aaron’s grandmother, drew strength in knowing that Aaron was with the Lord and that she would see him again someday.
This tragedy has come at a time in which Navy Seals were gaining attention in the media for a raid that killed Osama bin Laden. The 22 Navy Seals killed were not part of that raid, but were part of the unit that performed the raid. The death of these brave men also comes at a time in which our government has decided to cut defense funding by massive amounts.
It’s hard to understand tragedies like this. It goes past all human comprehension. I talked to my husband about it and we both came to the conclusion that God is in control. His thoughts are not our thoughts and his ways are not our ways. We just have to trust in Him.
Let’s say a quick prayer for those involved with this tragedy.
Be with everyone affected by this tragic event. Touch every family member and friend. You said in Matthew 5:4 that those who mourn will be comforted, so please fill the void in their hearts as they are coping with the loss of a loved one. Help the community to rally around them and provide much needed support.
Be with our troops from every branch of service. Shield and protect them from dangers seen and unseen. And finally Lord, be with our President, Congress, and every leader in our Armed Forces. Help them to make informed, quality decisions about the movement of our troops.
In Jesus’s Name,
Amen
